Glenhuntly Tennis Club Committee AGM Report.
The past 12 months has been another eventful year for the Club. The weather changed and we received much more rain over the year which had a great impact on stabilising the sub base of the courts. The wind and drought, which have caused so many maintenance problems for our en tout cas courts, have retreated for the moment. But the issue of the court surfaces remain and the Committee has a plan which I will outline in summary here.
However before I discuss the courts, I wish to thank our Committee for another great year. We have a wonderful committee of dedicated people who put up ideas and then set about implementing them. We also had the benefit of some new committee members this year and that helped invigorate the committee. We always welcome new committee members and we look forward to more new committee members in the coming year. This year we tackled the task of strengthen our financial position with some success and our Treasurer, Leo Cuerden, will comment on this later.
We have a loyal and friendly membership and our aim is to keep growing our membership base. This year we had a number of new initiatives such as the night tennis organised by Melissa Chenyi which resulted in a number of new members as well as some great social tennis. We have also been keen to foster juniors and with the assistance of the club¡¯s coaches we have achieved a bigger membership base from juniors and their families in recent months.
On a sad note, Ann Tarpy, a former member of our Club, passed away in March this year after coping for some time with early onset alzheimer's. Both Alan and Ann would be well known to many members of the club and we express our deepest sympathies to Alan.
Let me now turn to the condition of the four en tout cas courts as we still see this as the major issue for the Club. We continue to submit applications to Glen Eira Council and the State Government for funding and have not yet been successful. But the Committee is not giving up and we continue to consult widely within the community to explore all avenues to fund this major capital expense.
Rather than waiting for grants to come from one of more levels of Government we have taken the matter directly to our membership base to raise a sinking fund. In February we released a discussion paper on how we might develop a sinking fund for the club by offering long term memberships. The proposal was to use these prepaid contributions to the club to develop a fund that in the future could be used for significant capital upgrades that come along every 10 years or so. The committee considered the matter after discussing it with members and agreed we should offer to members a 10, 5, and 3 year membership deal this year. This is in addition to the annual membership option.
Well it was somewhat successful and we have opened a sinking fund with all members contributing to it in some way. Obviously those members who have taken a term membership have made a major contribution, but we are determined that these funds be set aside from annual expenditure needs in order for them to be available to fund those major capital upgrades such as the court surfaces. The sinking fund is currently valued at $11,125, so that is a great start. In addition until these funds are spent on capital projects, interest will accumulate within the fund. This outcome can be seen in our financial reports this year.
Our aim is to grow this sinking fund until we feel that the Club is in a position to seek $ for $ funding from Government and, if necessary, a loan from a financial institution. Funding the court surface project is no different to funding a renovation on your home. You need equity in your balance sheet to convince Government and/or a bank and that is what we have set out to do this year.
On the tennis front, the Club continues to maintain a strong presence in the winter pennant competitions and it looks like we might have at least one team in the finals this spring. Sunday social tennis is still very popular and thanks to Graham for organising this. But we still need to attract new members and the Committee would welcome any new ideas that might be successful in attracting new members.
Special thanks must go to the Committee members who each in their own way have made a major contribution to the club in the past year. The Committee has met bi-monthly and followed through an active program to serve club members.
The Committee would also like to thank those members who attended our working bees throughout the year. This voluntary contribution of your time assists greatly in helping the Committee contain maintenance costs. We very much appreciate the regular support of members at these quarterly working bees.
A special thanks to Ron Dunstan who undertakes caretaking duties around the club. Ron does a great job in fixing all those things that do need repairs around the club. In addition Ron is does a great job of supervising members when we have a working bee. His knowledge of line marking and court maintenance is extremely important for the club and in the past year we have repaired lines on 2 courts. There is more to go and that will be on our list at future working bees. Thanks Ron.
The Committee would also like to thank the club coaches Josephine O¡¯Gorman and her colleagues for their support of the Club.
The Committee would welcome new members to instil new ideas and enthusiasm around the Club.
